Overview

Esta nueva novela de Manuel Longares se desarrolla en una provincia enamorada de la música, donde sus calles llevan nombres de compositores y sus habitantes se agrupan en una de las dos asociaciones musicales autorizadas. Se trata de gente que solemos llamar normal -trabaja, forma una familia y paga impuestos-, salvo cuando la música exacerba su sentimentalidad y disloca su comportamiento. Un erudito costumbrista que es la gloria literaria de la provincia y del que no sabemos si vive o lleva años enterrado sostiene que los sentimentales constituyen un peligro para las familias y las naciones. Lo veremos a lo largo de esta novela en la que los melómanos quedan traicionados por su carácter y hasta las menores esperanzas se desfiguran y frustran. Sentimentales se divide en tres partes, que responden a otros tantos sucesos ocurridos en la provincia: un estreno sinfónico escandaloso, la disolución de un matrimonio de artistas y el retraso de un visitante ilustre. Es un homenaje a la música clásica a través de un texto en el que el juego literario, expresado con humor en frases distorsionadas, situaciones absurdas y denominaciones arbitrarias, persigue una realidad más rica.
